Your 'mind' and 'body' are often distinguished separately. But when considering mental health and physical health, the two go hand-in-hand. Everyone feels down, depressed or anxious at some point in their lives. For some people, these feelings can be stronger and last for weeks to months impacting on your behaviour and thoughts. They may not feel like their usual self and loose interest in activities and company they previously enjoyed.
Depression is very common and can affect anyone, at any age.
About 1 in 6 people experience depression at some time in their life.
Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and the support and treatment you need will depend on how severe your symptoms are.
Anxiety disorders are very common. Approximately 1 in 4 New Zealanders will be affected by an anxiety disorder at some stage in their lives.
Although it may sometimes feel like anxiety controls you, there are things you can do to manage and even overcome an anxiety disorder.
