Right. We can all agree that routine has gone a bit out the window during the level 4 COVID-19 lockdown in New Zealand. Clients have been reaching out to us concerned they will go “off the rails” over this time and ruin all the good nutrition they have been fueling themselves with during the year. So here are our top 5 Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath approved tips that you can start today!
5 Top Nutritionist Tips:
Tip 1: Start your day with a non-sugar, non-grain breakfast. Get this organised in advance. This will start without a sugar spike and drop, and stop you heading into cravings territory. Give these recipes a try!
Buckwheat pikelets (serves two - or a hungry one!)
1 cup Almond milk ½ cup Buckwheat flour 1 egg
1 grated apple ½ tsp cinnamon
This makes quite a solid pancake, which you can top with cooked berries or other fruit.
Chocolate chia porridge (serves 1)
2 Tbsp chia seeds 1 cup rice or almond milk 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed
1 Tbsp cocoa powder Optional Toppings: Sliced banana, mint, dark chocolate, nuts
Whisk together the chia seeds with the milk to evenly distribute. Whisk in the ground flaxseed and cocoa powder. Soak for 30 minutes or overnight. Serve with optional toppings as desired. Enjoy!
Tip 2: Pack in mixed nuts and seeds around 9.30-10am. A small handful of almonds, brazils, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds will do the trick (or any combination you happen to have at home).
Tip 3: Avoid bread or rice at lunchtime. There are a heap of alternatives to try!
